Unclassified Community Types
There are four other wetland areas that can be found in the Great Dismal Swamp, that constitutes 1/2% of the refuge. It is believed that these wetlands areas were formed by the altered disturbances to Non-Riverine Swamp Forest. These wetlands contribute to the diversity of the area because they are non-forest communities (FWS, 2006).
North Ditch Bog
North Ditch bog makes up 50 acres of the refuge. The area was transformed by fire and resulted in all the peat and trees being destroyed. Beavers have built dams in the area and so it remains flooded year round. The North Ditch Bog serves as a habitat for bald eagles and waterfowl (FWS, 2006).
Remnant Marsh
Remnant Marsh is about 35 acres and has been taken over by red maple. To restore it to a marsh, the area was burned a couple of times. The area currently serves as an open seasonally flooded marsh (FWS, 2006).
Fringe Marsh
Fringe Marsh is approximately 75 acres in size. The establishment of U.S. Highway 158, resulted in the creation of a small open marsh. More land was converted into marsh after fire got to parts of the maple forest (FWS, 2006).
Railroad and West Marsh
Railroad and West Marsh consist of 5 acres, which was cleared to create an open marsh habitat. The area has been preserved by burning and beavers currently damming the area which serves to control woody plants (FWS, 2006).
