Flora
The Great Dismal Swamp has a wide variety of vegetation within it's refuge. Due to human disturbances, such as logging and drainage ditches, the plant communities have changed tremendously. Most of the vegetation that covers the Great Dismal Swamp consist of second growth communities that are in various seral stages (Levy, 1991).
The refuge has a total of 340 vascular plants and is comprised of six major plant communities. These plant communities include the Mesic Mixed Hardwood Forests, Non-Riverine Swamp Forests, Natural Lake Draw-Down Shores, Non-Riverine Pine-Hardwood Forests, Pond Pine Woodlands and Pocosins and Peatland Atlantic White Cedar Forests (FWS, 2006).
